Episode 1 in a 4 part compilation "Save the People and Forests of Papua"

The set of films made entirely by Papuan NGOs in collaboration with villagers, tell how their communities have been adversely affected by destructive logging and oil palm plantations.

The four short films, launched under the collective banner: “Save the People and Forests of Papua” give an insight into a country which is currently off-limits to journalists.

Foreword to the Papuan Series, made by local NGOs


Neles Tebay, Lecturer in Philosophy and Theology, discusses the importance of films in the fight against deforestation and palm oil expansion in Papua, in a foreward to a series of 4 locally produced films, by Papuan filmmakers: "Save the People and Forests of Papua".

The People of Bukit Lawang: Handcrafted Films & Gekko Studio


Duration: 05:58 Location: North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The film is based in Bukit Lawang, where devastating floods caused over 239 deaths in 2003. The flooding was attributed to illegal logging in the surrounding Gunung Leuser National Park. Since the floods, this village community has been involved in voluntary forest governance enforcement schemes in an attempt to curb illegal logging in the National Park. The community has also started to recognise the important role of ecotourism in the preservation of their surrounding forests.

Protecting Indonesia's Forests - EIA

This film shows how civil society groups in Indonesia have joined together to tell their story and press for change in the major market for unsustainable timber - the European Union.
